![]() ![]() The bed was large and comfortable, the bathroom small but ok and the kitchenette had everything we needed when we stayed in and cooked. We stayed in an ocean viewing bungalow which had its own kitchen. The collection of wooden bungalows on a shale lane leading to the sea give this place a Motel feel but the colours, decor and manicured grounds ensure the place oozes Floridian character. Like stepping back to the 50s but with all mod cons. What more could you ask for? The area also has a wide variety of restaurants to choose from or you can BBQ at home. They even have a small bar at poolside with limited drinks and beer. The staff are very efficient and courteous and the grounds are impeccably clean as is with the heated pool. This resort is clean, very well managed and the owner or the manager are always available for questions. If you want the Hyatt Regency I would suggest that is where you should book. The Pines & Palms is a quite, laid back keys resort and is advertised as such. What you see on their web site is what you get. You can not please all of the people all of the time. It seems if one little thing is wrong everything else is covered under the same brush. I've read through a lot of tripadvisor comments and value the inputs very much but have learned to take some of them with a grain of salt. This year marks our 8th stay at the Pines & Palms and all I can say is diddo! I am a 35 year veteran from the RCAF and my wife is a retired medical doctor and we just love it down there. Less good: The bathroom in our suite (#20) was TINY, and for some reason the swimming pool is heated year-round so on a day when the air temperature is 85, the pool feels like bathwater. There are plans to open an on-site restaurant within a year, but frankly there are so many excellent dining choices nearby (including a great place for breakfast within a short walk) that we didn't miss it. (Then head over to the Lorelei Restaurant where they will be delighted to fry up your catch for an unforgettable lunch.) The bartender also operates a fishing charter, and one highlight of our trip was a morning catching yellowtail snapper which he deftly filleted at the dock. ![]() The staff is chipper and helpful, especially during happy hour around the pool. ![]() The resort is small, with only about 25 units, and while it's just off the main highway the feeling is quiet, cozy solitude. ![]() First the good stuff: The location, at Mile Marker 80, is exceptionally convenient to most of the Florida Keys' attractions, with a wide variety of excellent restaurants and shopping choices close by. and, on the whole, we agree after spending a recent week at Pines and Palms. I've done plenty of research on rates and quality of facilities - i can essily tell you if the price you're getting is cheap enough to justify staying out there (I suspect that it's not). I don't question the veracity of the previous poster's remarks about "a bowl of condoms" out in plain view but that sort of thing is far from typical. yes, parkign is a big prblem but if you stay at a facility that offers parking (as many do) you won't need your car for the entire weekend. There are plenty of quality guesthouses in Old Town that will be competitive with if not cheaper than the Travel Lodge in addition to having much nicer atmosphere and far more convenient location. ![]()
